About the Mentoring Program:
The Project Management Institute (PMI) Nashville Chapter’s objective is to offer member mentees an opportunity to develop and formalize a professional one-on-one relationship with a qualified PMI professional (mentors).The PMI Mentor Program will assist mentees in receiving project management guidance, gaining valuable project knowledge, increasing project management career opportunities, expanding their network and developing project management techniques.
The PMI Mentor Program will assist mentors in contributing to the PMI professional development of the mentees and add value to PMI Chapter and National Membership. Mentors will have the opportunity to share industry knowledge and expertise with mentee.
Earn up to 5 PDU’s per year as a mentor.

Benefits of the Program:
For the Chapter, the Middle Tennessee Project Management Workforce and PMOs: The PMI Nashville Chapter benefits from the mentorship program by offering members additional opportunities to learn, encouraging alternatives to networking, sponsoring educational and training projects, and adding value to chapter memberships. It also allows the Chapter to contribute to raising the level of proficiency of the Project Managers working in the Middle Tennessee region. Individual PMOs benefit from more proficient Project Managers. With projects commonly costing or impacting many thousands, even millions, of dollars, doesn’t it make good business sense for a project manager to be provided mentoring help in the quest for success, both of the project manager and of the project?
For the Mentee: The PMI mentees benefit by gaining additional experience in project management professional development, exploring the project management world through interaction with a qualified professional, and gaining hands-on experience through a practitioner’s perspective. The program partnership should assist in determining the mentee’s developmental needs, establishing goals within the profession, and establishing a meaningful professional relationship with mentor.
For the Mentor: This opportunity allows the mentors to give back to the profession, strengthens their interpersonal relationship skills and can be a career enhancement. Mentors are encouraged to share knowledge, which helps increase the mentor’s sense of self-worth.

PMI Nashville is led by volunteers that come together to present networking, educational and professional development events for the Nashville area. Volunteer work in any given year can be counted towards PDUs, and can be determined based on the guidelines as defined by PMI.org in their Continuing Certification Requirements. Volunteers are required on an as-needed basis depending on the program or committee involved. Contact by the respective coordinator will be made when the work needs to be completed (e.g. an upcoming event requires volunteers for coordination). The PMI Nashville Chapter holds several local Communities of Practice (CoPs) events each year to allow opportunities to network with peers and earn PDUs. PMI Global offers access to thirty-six communities; Our local chapter currently has five active communities.
1. Agile – The Agile Community of Practice delivers knowledge and provides networking opportunities for agile practitioners and includes anyone interested in, working in, or impacted by developments in the collection of good practices, principles and techniques in agile project management. The community enables agile practitioners to contribute and share their knowledge, explores the relationship between agile principles and practices, and communicates how agile may differ from and/or complement PMI project management.
2. Government – The Government Community of Practice assists with the advancement of the principles and practices of the public sector project management, while promoting the exchange of information among government professionals. The community promotes and develops strategic plans to create and/or bring awareness about public sector challenges and creates strategies for easy access to best practices.
3. Healthcare – The Healthcare Community of Practice examines and extends project management knowledge in the healthcare industry. The community communicates consistent project management terminology and practices among healthcare project professionals.
4. IT/Business Intelligence – The IT/Business Intelligence Community of Practice delivers knowledge and provides networking opportunities for project professionals interested in, working in, or impacted by developments within information technology and business intelligence project management.
5. PMO – The PMO Community of Practice assists with bridging the critical organizational gap between delivery and strategy that focuses on the translation of organizational strategies into actionable plans. The community facilitates collaboration, knowledge sharing, and professional development opportunities for growing project, program, and portfolio professionals.

The PMI Nashville Chapter benefits from the study groups by offering members additional opportunities to learn, encouraging alternative ways to networking, and adding value to chapter memberships.
The PMI Study Group attendees benefit in a variety of ways:
- Attendees are encouraged to alter their old ways of thinking
- Less effective patterns of behavior are minimized and productivity is maximized
- Procrastination is less likely in a group environment, because of the accountability to the others in the group
- Group study encourages attendees to explain things aloud; speaking to and listening to others, often improves recall ability
- The various perspectives from others in the group improve attendees’ chances of anticipating test questions
- Some group members are likely to understand something others don’t
- Group members will listen and discuss information and concepts during the group session
- Teaching/explaining information/process/concepts to other group members will help attendees reinforce mastery of the information/process/concepts
Study Group Recommended Protocol
- Study groups typically meet once per week for 1.5-2 hours
- One knowledge area per study group session should be covered
- Typical length is 12 weeks; however, it is up to all members of the group to decide
- Each member volunteers to facilitate/teach a knowledge area at least once – approx. 60 mins
- Some study groups have used prepared questions to facilitate the study sessions rather than each member covering a knowledge area. The group has the option of deciding the best method for their style of learning.
- Be prepared for each knowledge area – even if you are not the facilitator
- Take a pre-test prior to each subject; approx. 20 mins then review answers in round table
- Take a post-test after each subject; approx. 20 mins then review answers in round table
- Participate and encourage positive dialogue
Study group requirements
- Study groups should have a minimum of 5 members and generally no more than 12, which allows for critical mass to continue should someone drop out, but not so many people that everyone doesn’t have a chance to participate and lead
- Study groups are self-directed by pre-designated Project Manager(s) after the kick-off meeting
- A predetermined location for the group to meet (preferably a conference room at their office/business)
- Each member contributes to discussions
- Study group members work collaboratively during discussions

- The PMP study book, Rita Mulcahy’s PMP EXAM PREP, EIGHTH EDITION—UPDATED by RMC Learning Solutions, will be purchased by PMI, mailed to participants and used for the group study. It is important for the group to utilize standard materials.
Study Group Commitments
- Study groups members should follow the protocol set forth by the their group
- Study groups require a commitment of 100 or more hours to studying
- Study group members should be on time to group sessions
- Create a study plan – this will help you be prepared for each session
- Study group members should be respectful of others knowledge and viewpoints
- Study group members should set a date to take the exam

The men and women of the United States Armed Forces have served our country well. Over past decades, these men and women have demonstrated selfless service and faced a multitude of challenges during their personal transitions. Almost 350,000 personnel transition from active military service to veteran status each year¹. These highly qualified men and women are seeking civilian careers, but are either unaware of the jobs available or unable to translate their military experience into something meaningful to civilian employers.
PMI believes that service members and veterans have already performed project and program management, just utilizing military methods and terminology. Through PMI’s “Program for Preparing U.S. Military for Project Management Careers”, chapters can assist military personnel and veterans in obtaining rewarding civilian jobs, while enabling the civilian work force with high quality project professionals.
PMI’s goal with this initiative is to aid veterans, active duty military, Guard, Reserve, and their families to:
- Join — Candidates who join PMI and their local chapter immediately become part of an active and supportive community of project professionals.
- Qualify — Through PMI and local chapter membership, candidates gain access to professional development opportunities that help them prepare for a project management certification and search for a civilian job.
- Certify — All of PMI’s certifications are approved for reimbursement under the GI Bill. Globally recognized and in demand by employers, PMI certification further supports the individual in their career development.
- Place — Through mentorship from fellow PMI members, candidates receive the advice and support they need to take the next step in their career transition. Additionally, PMI’s job board offer extensive career support.
