CoP Event – Music City Center: Green Roof Project Management
July 26, 2016 @ 5:30 am - 7:00 pm
Learn about Project Management Practices applied to one of our great Nashville buildings, the Music City Center. Several Green Roof projects have emerged in past years to mediate the impact of water pollution from urban development.
In 2007, local municipalities across the country began to assess the impact of water pollution and storm water run-off as a by-product of urban development. In response to the Great Recession of 2008, the US Government injected money for infrastructure development with the America Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA). In this legislation was specific funding for green roof and storm water management projects the EPA required to mediate the impact of water pollution from urban development. The green roofing industry in the United States emerged despite the collapse in the construction industry during the recession. This presentation describes the emergence of a new green industry and the trials of developing a product in an emerging domestic market will highlight the challenges every PM faces. Tom’s experience includes transition to be a construction industry professional and building over 20 large commercial green roofs while developing quality assurance systems to meet warranty demands of the largest roofing manufacturers. The presentation will include images of the Music City Center, Fed Ex Cargo Sort building, the American Life Insurance building in Louisville and many others.
Thomas Cooper is a Senior Statistical Research Analyst with the Health Care and Finance Administration for the State of Tennessee. He began his career in Chicago as a broker for J.P. Morgan running the trading floor operation for the bank on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. After a short career as an independent trader in Chicago, Tom moved to London where he became the Managing Director of TransMarket Group Ltd. He returned to the US ten years later and left the financial markets just prior to the credit crises. In 2007, Tom and a partner created Green Roof Solutions, Inc. to manufacture and distribute green roofing systems for storm water abatement in the US. Prior to this time, all systems were manufactured in Europe. The timing coincided with a mandate for green roof installations on all commercial construction in Chicago and other cities where storm water pollution was a problem. Tom’s expertise is in project risk management.
